About us
Apna News is a community-led initiative based in Bolton, which
produces a unique newsletter, aimed at the region's ethnic
minority population.
The
Newsletter is produced in three languages - English, Urdu
and Gujarati. Hand delivered free to ethnic minority households,
it is made available from a number of outreach locations such
as libraries community centres and health centres. Apna means
"our": demonstrating the project's intention to
create a publication that belongs very much too all section's
of the community.
Apna
promotes cultural awareness in a very practical way - by communicating
a range of positive news stories and publicizing opportunities
in a relevant manner.
Those
involved with the project feel that although the main target
audience is the ethnic minority community, the wider community
can also benefit. Apna feels it has a role to play in bridging
the cultural gaps that exist within the community.
Integration
is a fundamental part of the philosophy.
Established
in 1997, Apna News has proven to be a successful and effective
medium, communicating with a diverse local community and encouraging
a better understanding of cultural issues. The project has
done a lot to enhance and promote community relations in the
area. It has also effectively raised awareness of service
provision; ensuring ethnic minorities have full and proper
access.
From
a business perspective the publication offers a niche market,
accessing the ethnic minority community. This has proved to
be successful lever to attract business advertisers.
