CP Taylor’s heart warming tale of the drama of daily life set against the backdrop of World War II is coming to the Oldham Coliseum Theatre this March.
In Newcastle, the Stotts are an eccentric family waging their personal battles against the terrifying backdrop of war. Amidst the air raid sirens and fears of poison gas, Mam makes Spam sandwiches, Dad makes his own entertainment, Grandpa mourns his dead whippet, whilst daughters Joyce and Helen discover the joy and heartbreak of first love.
Directed by Sarah Punshon, who has experience of working on both stage and television productions, most notably Eastenders. Trading Albert Square for an air raid shelter. Actress Katherine Dow-Blyton, who is no stranger to television either - well known for her role as Sally Hunter in Hollyoaks, will also be swapping soaps for Spam sandwiches.
Joining Katherine are returning cast members Ged McKenna (The Rise and Fall of Little Voice), Michael Imerson (Perfect Days, Brighton Beach Memoirs) and Simeon Truby who was last at the Coliseum appearing in Dick Barton – Special Agent. They will be joined by Jack Bennett, Anna Doolan and Laura Norton who are all making their first appearance on the Coliseum stage.
This is the first time the New Vic Theatre and Oldham Coliseum have collaborated on a co-production. New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins and the Coliseum’s Artistic Director Kevin Shaw both chose this fantastic play after discussing what productions were at the top of their wish list.
And A Nightingale Sang runs from 11 March – 3 April at the Oldham Coliseum Theatre.
